Five ways a car wash in Kenya loses money, and how to stop them

A car wash looks simple: water, soap, labour, cash. But many car wash owners in Kenya work hard every weekend and still wonder where the money went. Here are five common leaks and how a car wash system closes them.

1. Washes that never get recorded

On a busy day, a wash paid in cash straight to a washer may never reach the books. Multiply that by a few cars a day and it's a lot of money a month.

Fix: every car goes through the till by number plate before or after the wash, and every payment gets a receipt.

2. Cash that doesn't match

When several people handle cash, shortages happen and nobody can say when.

Fix: one attendant takes every payment through the till. At the end of the day the system shows what came in by cash, M-Pesa and card, so the cash drawer can be checked against it.

3. Commission disputes

Washers paid from a handwritten tally argue about the count, and owners sometimes pay twice.

Fix: each wash records the washer; earnings and payouts are worked out by the system.

4. Free washes given too freely

Loyalty is good, but "free for a friend" adds up.

Fix: a loyalty rule the till enforces, so the free wash is given when it's earned.

5. Costs you don't see

Water bills, soap, electricity, rent and washer pay eat the margin. Without them recorded, a busy month can be a losing month.

Fix: record expenses as they happen; the profit report shows sales less every cost.
